At Sun King Farms, we produce Arabian horses with that special beauty that says “I am an Arabian”. Our horses are athletic, beautiful horses that stand out in a crowd. It is our goal to dispel the belief that Arabians cannot be sane family horses. People of all levels have enjoyed our horses as companions for the last 45 years. They have been first horses, trail horses, international champions, brood mares, endurance horses, and winners of the Tevis cup and of endurance races around the world. Our horses have taught people to ride, taken their owners new to heights, and helped them through the lows. They have been best friends.
Sun King Farms was originally started by Raymond and Catherine Smith. Cathy had been “Arabian crazy” since childhood. She moved to California, got a grade A mare, and promptly bred her to an Arabian. That started an Arabian breeding program that registered over 100 purebred and 1/2 Arabian horses. In 1999 Erin Morrissey moved to the ranch to go to Cal Poly. Her and Cathy became fast friends. Cathy became Erin's mentor, second mother, and eventually they became business partners. Cathy and Erin made changes to the ranch and eventually to the breeding program, dabbling in the Arabian/American Quarter Horse cross. When Cathy passed away in 2015 it devastated Erin and all at the farm.
Since her passing every decision has been colored with thoughts of Cathy and her amazing spirit. Here at Sun King we have been undergoing upgrades and renovations. Erin has been carrying on Cathy’s dream of breeding Arabians and in the last couple years we have included the breeding of more half Arabians, as well as Quarter Horses.
Our ultimate goal with Sun King is to create a safe space for everyone to come and enjoy horses. Giving opportunities to people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford horses or even know a horse connection is what they need.
